The SPFL will meet with Sky Sports this week with Virtual Season Tickets on the agenda.

When the option was first confirmed it was warmly welcomed by supporters facing up to the season starting with matches played Behind Closed Doors.

It quickly became apparent that the innovation was for Season Ticket holders only with numbers pegged to the amount sold by clubs for the 2019/20.

Celtic have effectively used the breakthrough as a marketing tool to drive Season Ticket sales cutting off thousands of regular fans whose circumstances make buying a Season Ticket impossible.

Households with more than one Season Ticket face paying full price to watch matches on one remote device but there could be further details on VST’s in the week ahead.

The Athletic reports:

There is no getting around the fact that Celtic are asking fans to pay an exorbitant amount of money to watch their team on laptop, phone and tablet screens — and to rely on their broadband to keep up — without offering other incentives.

There was no update on the possibility of pay-per-view opportunities for standalone matches in Celtic’s statement, though there should be clarity following another meeting between the SPFL and Sky later this week.

In contrast to Celtic’s approach Motherwell, Kilmarnock and Dundee United have promised that fans will be given 19 live matches on their season Ticket on top of the Virtual option.

Whatever number of matches are played BCD will be added as a credit for the 2021/22 season with all three clubs reporting strong sales accompanied by goodwill from supporters.
