The Frimpong family struggled to recognise Jeremie when he returned to Manchester for Lockdown.

Last September the teenager left behind the comforts of life in the Manchester City Academy to test himself with the goal of first team football.

As a deadline day signing his arrival attracted some attention but there was nothing other than potential on his CV from his days at the Etihad.

Patrick Roberts, John Guidetti and Jason Denayer had moved to Celtic on loan from City but with a four-year contract there was no way back for the young full-back.

On the pitch Frimpong has been a revelation- adding energy and enthusiasm to the Celtic side with no little ability. Almost instantly he seemed perfectly at home with no bedding in required.

Frimpong will start the new season as Celtic’s first choice at right-back or right wing-back with a good part of his success due to how he has adapted to life off the park in a brand new city.

After returning to Glasgow he told The Sun:

My family and the people around me have noticed a difference. They will say to me, ‘Jeremie, are you changing? You are taking on more responsibility’.

That’s what happens when you live by yourself. You need to do things as your family isn’t there. I can ask people for help, but I’m by myself in Glasgow, so I need to get on with it.

Was it a brave decision to leave Manchester? If you want to be a footballer, sometimes you have to make those decisions.

As a young player you sometimes have to move. You can’t always stay with your family. Growing up, I knew one day I’d probably have to make that decision and go elsewhere.

It was tough leaving my family and all my siblings. Coming to Glasgow by myself was hard. You have to adapt, though, and handle the situation.

Frimpong ended his first season in Glasgow with an SPFL Premiership winners medal, a Betfred Cup winners medal and has just been voted Celtic’s Young Player of the Year.
