Barry Fry is trying to talk up Celtic’s interest in £15m rated Ivan Toney.

The former Barnet boss is a legend of wheeler-dealing, a mini Harry Redknapp with decades of experience in the transfer business.

Fry is currently the Director of Football at Peterborough where Toney is the prize asset.

Talking up an ‘Old Firm transfer battle’ is about a decade out of date with Celtic’s recent transfer activity easily defined. It doesn’t involve £15m signings in any circumstances, certainly not from the third tier of English football.

If Fry has been paying attention he’ll have noted that over the last two summers Celtic have been keen to sell players for £20m plus, bank half the fee while spending £7-9m on well sourced investments such as Odsonne Edouard and Chris Jullien.

This summer even Liverpool are preparing for a very cautious approach to the transfer market but picking up on a report from the Daily Mail, The Sun reports:

I’ve had agents on telling me that Rangers and Celtic are very interested. But I haven’t had any calls from either Rangers or Celtic, personally.

If they have any sense, they’ll pay us £15million to get him. If they haven’t any sense at all, then I won’t be hearing from them.

Toney has scored an impressive 24 goals in 32 League One appearances, the 24-year-old has 12 months left on his Peterborough contract.
