Nikola Katic will be out of football for the foreseeable future.

The defender started 17 SPFL Premiership matches last season with his absence severely reducing Steven Gerrard’s options in central defence.

Connor Goldson seems undropable with the other two options- George Edmondson and Filip Helander having unconvincing seasons after being signed last summer.

On social media last night it was claimed that Katic had suffered cruciate ligament damage, in response at 9.30pm last night the club reported:

RANGERS are disappointed to announce that Niko Katic has sustained an injury during preseason training.

The injury was sustained more than a week ago and will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future. Niko is being looked after by our medical team led by Dr Mark Waller.

It seems odd that an injury was sustained more than a week ago before being announced.

Katic was reported to have bulked up during the three month break, fortunately for the defender last October he signed a new contract keeping him at Ibrox until 2023.
