Celtic have been planning towards staging a pre-season friendly in front of fans on July 25.

Alongside the SRU using Murrayfield, Celtic have been in regular dialogue with the Scottish Government to look into ways that supporters can be safely allowed back into stadiums.

Reducing social distancing from 2 metres to 1 makes a massive difference as does the increase in bubbles with family groups able to meet up outdoors.

A number of Lockdown issues are being relaxed in Scotland over the next fortnight, in August schools will go back but last week the message from the Scottish Government was cautious regarding the return of fans to watch matches.

The Daily Record reports:

Celtic, too, believe their stadium can showcase how fans can be allowed back in without risking a spread of the virus. They had hoped to stage a trial run of their own at Celtic Park before the end of this month at a pre-season friendly on July 25.

Chief executive Peter Lawwell had been working towards a partial re-opening on the first day of the new season.

He has calculated that as many as 30,000 fans could be spread out safely around his stadium by the end of August but all of those plans appeared to be volleyed up into the air by the FM and her eager professor on Thursday.

That is why there will be some urgent talks between the game’s governing bodies and the House on the Hill over the coming days.

Watching a football match in an outdoor arena with appropriate safety measures appears to be less of a risk than much of the activities going on across Scotland over the coming weeks.

Buses and trains continue to run which appear to be more of a risk than two hours at a football stadium.

Restrictions to entry would clearly be imposed with fans within 20 miles of the stadium the obvious target for viewing ‘test case’ matches.
