This stage of the year is usually one of great optimism for football fans as they anticipate the prospects of the season ahead.

With no evidence to the contrary hope is everywhere as the last few years has proven at Ibrox has as the gullible cling on to #goingfor55.

Since Mark Warburton launched that myth in 2016 Celtic have swept up every domestic honour but come summer time there has always been hope that the latest revolution can bring a recognisable trophy to Ibrox.

In season three of the Gerrard Revolution delusion finally seems to have given way to reality.

Jon McLaughlin from third tier Sunderland has replaced Wes Foderingham as back-up goalkeeper while Calvin Bassey, without a single professional match to his name isn’t quite Arthur Numan or Michael Ball.

The latest name linked with Ibrox, and triggering bouts of depression is Bongani Zungu who is apparently a South African international midfielder and not a high scorer at Scrabble. South Africa are currently 71 in the FIFA rankings.

Zunga plays for Amiens who finished second bottom in the French League last season, winning 4 out of 28 matches which isn’t quite the winning mentality that the Gerrard Revolution requires.

In 21 appearances the South African ace failed to score but does have one assist to his name. A fee of around £3.5m is being associated with Zunga.
