Celtic have made contact with AEK Athens over the availability of goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.

With Craig Gordon joining Hearts and the chase for Fraser Forster going cold bringing in a ready made first team goalkeeper is the priority for Neil Lennon who had three international keepers to select from last season.

Over the last year a couple of Greek websites have linked Celtic with Barkas but now the need has been stepped up with four weeks to go before the opening SPFL fixture.

Writing in the Daily Mail, the well-connected Stephen McGowan reports:

Celtic have been quoted a price of £5million for Greek international goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.

The AEK Athens stopper features on a shortlist of replacements for Fraser Foster after the former England international chose to stay put at Southampton.

And Sportsmail understand the Scottish champions lodged an enquiry earlier this week.

Joe Hart and David Marshall have both been linked with a move to Celtic with other names bound to be under scrutiny.

Goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods has helped revive the careers of Forster and Gordon and will have a significant say in who is brought in for the new season.

Barkas was in goals for AEK in both legs of their Champions League win over Celtic in 2018.

Young Celtic keeper Ross Doohan is wanted on loan by Ross County with a deal expected to go through once the hoops bring in a first team keeper.
