Celtic are reported to be ‘all over’ Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie.

The claim was made by ESPN commentator Taylor Twellman during a friendly match against New York City with the report covered on the official MLS website.

McKenzie has come through the ranks at Union and captained the US u-20 side at the 2019 World Cup Finals in Poland where Timo Weah was a team-mate.

Celtic are clearly looking at central defensive options with Branimir Kalaica of Benfica reported as a target last week although there is also interest from Leeds United and Watford.

In January 2019 Celtic signed Andrew Gutman and Manny Perez from the USA but so far they have continued their careers in the MLS. Celtic have never confirmed if those players have a work permit for Scotland.

As things stand Stephen Welsh is the third choice central defender behind Kris Ajer and Chris Jullien and looks like getting his opportunity in next week’s friendly matches in France.

Jozo Simunovic was released at the end of his contract with Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed drafted into central defence at times last season.
