A clip from RTE’s coverage of the Leipzig v Paris Saint Germain last night showed up the attitude and approach of BBC Scotland to football coverage.
Richie Saddler, a former CEO of Shamrock Rovers explained in detail to viewers that the decade long run of RB Leipzig from obscurity to the last four of the Champions League isn’t the stuff of a misty-eyed fairytale.
It is a crude marketing ploy for a drinks firm, just as PSG and Manchester City are trampling all over the game to push their own vested interests.
With real journalism being given credit on social media Tom English couldn’t resist getting involved, the attention seeking BBC Scotland messenger who spent four months this year campaigning for Hearts. Quite what he wanted is hard to tell but every Saturday afternoon through Lockdown he’d get text messages from his important contacts to broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound programme.
The real issues of Scottish football are something that English and his cronies wouldn’t go near, even when presented with more hard evidence than required.
You won’t hear English say a word about Rod Petrie and Andrew Dickson being involved in the SFA despite their roles in the 2011 UEFA licences which led to HMRC losing out on £2.8m in order to deny Celtic a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
He won’t touch the lack of Financial Fair Play rules in the Scottish game. The lack of which allows one club to pile up incredible levels of debt, matching their turnover in order to achieve the same goal orchestrated by the heavily conflicted Campbell Ogilvie in 2011.
And we all know how that story concluded.
Wow — imagine anything like this on Sportscene. This is – well watch for yourself! https://t.co/nNCirpQpr2

And with your own words you’ve utterly shamed your self. I doubt you see it.

That sacred tenet of Scottish Sports Journalism.

Exactly!

This is a good point well made.

Does that mean no one should call out the owners of Leipzig, or Man City, or the philosophy behind a PSG or whoever for fear of such intimidation and are different levels of serious intimidation now just accepted as part of the job? If so that is an indictment and a half.

Your lack of courage since David Murray sold Rangers has led to a farcical “Emperors new clothes” situation that you’re stuck in.
If you’d been honest and used the platform you have you could’ve helped resolve many of the problems.— Cautious Dave (@cautiousdave) August 19, 2020
@mstewart_23 got binned for much less. Don’t listen to a single programme now and as for sportscene. Well ??
