Jack Aitchison is reported to be close to joining Barnsley.

The striker has a year left on his contract with Celtic likely to be looking for a nominal transfer fee with a significant sell-on fee.

In May 2016 Aitchison became Celtic’s youngest ever goal-scorer when he netted against Motherwell in Ronny Deila’s farewell game but his development has been stalled.

The lack of structure beyond youth football in Scotland has denied Aitchison and others in and around the 2000 group the opportunity to realise the potential that they showed coming through the club academy.

Robbie Deas has joined Inverness Caley Thistle, Kerr McInroy, Scott Robertson and Stephen Welsh are on the fringes of Neil Lennon’s squad but lacking match time while Daniel Church is likely to leave the club during the current window.

In 2015, 2016 and 2017 Aitchison played for Scotland at the u-17 European Championships but with no effective reserve league he has gone out on loan to Dumbarton, Alloa and Forest Green Rovers to get senior experience.

Cameron Harper has been promoted into the first team squad this season with the prospect of a permanent move to Barnsley appearing to be the best option for all parties.

Last season Aitchison scored six goals in 27 appearances for Forest Green.
