Marian Shved missed out on an appearance for Mechelen at the weekend because he was unable to get a flight from Ukraine to Belgium.

The winger made three substitute appearances for Celtic last season before being sent out on loan to the Belgian side.

Shved has played for 24 minutes since moving to Mechelen but was left out on the match against Oostende after making a marathon drive across Europe.

The Daily Record reports:

Club boss Wouter Vrancken revealed he allowed the 23-year-old to return to the Ukraine during the international break but he faced a nightmare attempting to return. Vrancken says Shved was unable to get a flight back and was forced to take a car.

He was then left out of Mechelen’s 1-0 defeat to Oostende on Saturday following the 2500km trek across the continent, with fellow Parkhead loanee Jack Hendry scoring the winner.

Vrancken admitted: “His flight was fully booked so he had to take the car to Belgium. He only arrived last night.”

Shved did attend the match where a stoppage time goal from Jack Hendry gave the visitors full points.

Celtic paid a fee reported to be around £1.5m for Shved in January 2019 and immediately loaned him back to Karpaty Lviv.

By the time he returned to Celtic Neil Lennon had taken over as manager but it was fairly obvious that Brendan Rodgers wasn’t the driving force behind the move.

With a contract at Celtic until 2023 the young Ukrainian will be looking to make an impact in Belgium otherwise he’ll be back in Scotland next summer.
