Fans have lapped up a story in The Sun that 34 clubs have been linked with Alfredo Morelos.
The purpose of the story was probably to illustrate the most wanted striker in Europe but it has backfired as it highlights the lack of substance to the regular feed of Alfie Bingo.
Scottish publishers appear to have great insight into the transfer plans of foreign clubs but in terns of an actual bid only Jim White sweet talking the president of Lille on TalkSPORT can be considered genuine. Lille haven’t followed up after their bid was rejected.
Over the last fortnight Fiorentina, Bayer Leverkusen and Porto have all been linked with the Ibrox striker but every story follows a familiar pattern.
Mention of last season’s 29 goals appears compulsory although little attention is given to scoring in one SPFL match in 2020, seven red cards in 18 months or a complete failure to score against Celtic.
Had a realistic fee of £6-8m been put on Morelos the club could probably have banked a record transfer fee but the insistence on Dembele Dollars has left clubs to look at other targets.
Over the last fortnight Newcastle have signed Callum Wilson for £20m with a similar fee taking James Rodriguez to Everton.
This is the sixth window that there has been speculation over bids for Morelos, the next window opens on January 1 for a familiar story.
