One prominent Ibrox fan was caught badly out of his comfort zone over the stunning swoop for South African international star Bongani Zungu.

At the start of August there was speculation that the 27-year-old was about to become the midfield creator that would be the final piece in Steven Gerrard’s transfer jigsaw.

When the move fell through Mark Dingwall, the brains behind Follow Follow was quickly off his mark to explain to fans that ‘Rangers had never contemplated a deal’. For further detail he highlighted Zungu’s dreadful injury record.

Last season Zungu played 21 times in Ligue 1, contributing one assist and no goals as Amiens were relegated. The previous season he made five appearances in the league although to be fair he played in 26 Ligue 1 matches in the 2017/18 season during which he scored one goal.

No doubt he’ll be compared to Kevin De Bruyne, Luca Modric and Paul Pogba as the Ibrox communications machine springs into action.

Signed on a season long loan, Zungu now has to force his way past Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Steven Davis and Ianis Hagi for a place in Steven Gerrard’s plans.

With South Africa rated 72nd in the FIFA rankings it seems that the SFA and SPFL have fast tracked through a work permit for the international star.

Last summer Gerrard swooped to sign Andy King on loan from Leicester City.
