Celtic fans weren’t slow to share their opinions on Charlie Nicholas’ transfer window verdict.

According to the former Sky Sports pundit Celtic had taken the cheap options while their city rivals had secured the best deals.

Celtic fans aren’t slow to criticise their own club, after losing to Ferencvaros in the Champions League it was open season on every aspect of the club with no one spared.

Some big name departures were anticipated but instead David Turnbull, Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt signed up for what promises to be a historic season. By any logical analysis it was a successful window in terms of player trading, Duffy and Turnbull are known quantities while Laxalt, at 27, has a pedigree that no one else in the SPFL can get close to.

With three permanent signings and three loan deals Neil Lennon has added genuine contenders for first team places. Celtic’s first choice XI is difficult to predict but adding five more to Barkas, Duffy, Laxalt, Turnbull, Elyounoussi and Ajeti would be a decent starting point.

Fraser Forster was a big influence to replace but Barkas looks capable of that with the other arrivals all improvements on the players that have moved on.

The proof of the transfer business will be carried out on the pitch rather than on paper or online but in comparison to recent transfer windows most Celtic fans are delighted with the business completed ahead of a once-in-a-generation season.
