Daniel Church has signed a short-term deal with League One Dumbarton.

The defender cut short his Celtic deal by a year in a bid to get his career under way after a period of stagnation.

In August 2019 he went on loan to East Fife but part-time football on a plastic pitch on the other side of the country did little for his development with Darren Young’s side playing a very basic version of the game mainly aimed at getting the ball lumped through to strikers as quick as possible.

Two years earlier Church had looked a real prospect but with Reserve football cut back he failed to make the progress expected of a Scotland u-17 and u-19 internationalist.

Earlier this season he spent time on trial at Dundee but the prospect of regular football close to home can hopefully kick start his career.

Jim Duffy also has former Celts Sam Wardrop, PJ Crossan and Denny Johnstone in his first team squad, Church goes straight into the Dumbarton squad for tomorrow’s Betfred Cup tie against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
