Neil Lennon fears that Jeremy Frimpong may have suffered ligament damage after a brutal attack from Devate Cole.

The Motherwell defender lunged straight into Frimpong’s left thigh early in the second half of Celtic’s 4-1 win at Fir Park.

Referee Andrew Dallas seemed reluctant to take any action before showing a yellow card to the striker as Frimpong lay writhing on the ground.

The incident happened right in front of the two dug-outs, after the match Lennon told The Herald:

I didn’t get a good view of it because Jerry’s back was to me but I saw the replay and he’s high and late. He’s in a lot of discomfort at the minute. It could be ligament damage, we don’t know yet. We will have to assess him over the next couple of days.

After two minutes of treatment Frimpong hopped a couple of times to test his left leg then continued. Fifteen minutes later he was replaced by Hatem Abd Elhamed.

Throughout the first half Dallas let a number of niggly late challenges on Celtic players go unpunished as the hoops raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a double from Moi Elyounoussi.

Celtic are next in action in a fortnight’s time away to Hibs with the Celtic medical team having to assess the damage to Frimpong and a repeat of Kris Ajer’s groin strain.
