Steven Gerrard’s dreams of winning his first trophy in management are over after he watched his Ibrox Galacticos crash out of the Betfred Cup to St Mirren.

It was a night of high drama at whatever St Mirren call Love Street these days but after 97 action packed minutes it is St Mirren that join Hibs, St Johnstone and Livingston in the semi-final draw for the competition.

There was a big blow for the visitors before kick-off when Andrew Dallas was injured in the warm up but under rookie ref David Dickenson the Tribute Act opened the scoring in the seventh minute through Conor Goldson.

Five minutes from the break Calvin Bassey chopped down an opponent with Dickenson surprising everyone by pointing to the spot- the first penalty that the Ibrox side have conceded this season. Jamie McGrath netted as Greegsy jumped the wrong way.

Early in the second half McGrath put St Mirren in front but with Goldson standing in an offside position Steven Davis equalised in the 88th minute.

St Mirren forced a few corners in stoppage time, in the 93rd minute Connor McCarthy netted from six yards after Greegsy parried a shot.

Jim Goodwin was red carded for his celebrations but with four minutes due to be added the final whistle went in the 97th minute with St Mirren through to the last four.

After the match the ever-humble Mister Gerrard looked devastated, BBC Scotland pundits Chick Young and Steven Thompson were lost for words.
