Peter Lawwell doesn’t have his troubles to seek at the moment even though he has banked more than £7m in salary and bonus over the last three seasons, the Rodgers Revolution has certainly been profitable for some.
The Celtic Chief Executive has his work cut out on and off the pitch at the moment but a Lockdown look through some old editions of the Celtic View has unearthed some interesting quotes and a little publicised role he had under a previous regime.
In 1991 under the guidance and spin of Michael Kelly Celtic were trying to find their feet in a new commercial age while across the city Dave Murray was maximising everything, especially the overdraft to bring success to Ibrox.
Lawwell came in to Celtic as Financial Controller with some grand plans to maximise the ‘Celtic brand’ for the final decade of the 20th century.
A close look at the quotes reveals similar soundbites to those that come out of the club today, many equally as hollow such as the European aspirations with Malmo, Maribor, Cluj, AEK Athens, Ferencvaros and Sparta Prague all knocking Celtic out in recent seasons at a cost of many millions.

I think this aspect of Lawell’s rise at Celtic has been underplayed. I didn’t know about his involvement with the previous regime until last week. You can see where he’s picked up his PR skills!

The exploitation of Celtic for financial gain from proceeds of Celtic pools Celtic shops Celtic season tickets !
Are you sure that’s not today’s latest rag headline .

Be interesting to know how many shares that big Celtic fan Lawwell purchased back in 1994 when many of us were trying to save the club from the people he was working for. https://t.co/35qGqvYrFB

“A club as big as Celtic has to have as it’s main target becoming a major force in Europe.” Lawwell 1991.
A club that was ranked 28th in Europe when he came back in 2003, just back from a European final, now 44th.
10th best team in 2003. 67th in 2020.
Great job Pete. https://t.co/35qGqvYrFB
