Leigh Griffiths has revealed that a knee injury in training forced him to miss three Celtic matches.

The striker came on for 20 minutes away to Hibs a fortnight ago after three substitute appearances for Scotland but missed out on three consecutive defeats that has forced the club hierarchy onto the defensive.

Griffiths sat at home as Celtic crashed to defeats against Sparta Prague, Ross County and AC Milan but after being presented to the media looks like being involved today against St Johnstone.

So far this season has very much been stop-go for the former Hibs striker but with a packed programme over the next month he is looking to make his mark.

Griffiths told the Daily Record:

I was just getting into a good rhythm and getting minutes on the pitch. Hopefully I can get a few more on Sunday and kick on. It happened in training, it just felt a wee bit sore. I couldn’t train so I had to go for a scan on it but luckily it came back all clear.

These little niggly injuries are so frustrating, especially now when I haven’t been able to help the team. Hopefully I’m back and I can get a good run of games between now and the New Year.

I’ve been training the last few days while the boys were in Milan. And before the injury I was in a good place, I was training well every day. I’ve been working hard on my fitness and that was coming back to its maximum.

Hopefully I’m not far away from that again and if the gaffer calls upon me I will be ready to go. If I was starting games, it would be an ideal opportunity to get more fitness into me

Griffiths has only started one match this season- at home to AC Milan in October when he was substituted at half-time.

Over the last two years he has had a number of issues to contend with but many fans still believe that he is the best finisher at the club.
