There was at best a lukewarm response from Celtic fans to the rumour of a new face on the Board of Directors. Another Desmond.

Celtic Underground, known as Celtic Rumours on Twitter made the claim tonight with fans looking for signs that the club hierarchy is concerned about the alarming events of this season.

Peter Lawwell has been the focal point for most anger, in his 18th year as CEO there are plenty of fans looking for his removal with few arguing the case for stability.

Behind Lawwell, and backing the CEO throughout his tenure is Dermot Desmond, the mystical figure that pops in now and then on Celtic matters.

A shareholder since 1995, he increased his holding to around 38% when Fergus McCann sold up four years later and effectively controls the club from afar with Nick Train, an investment manager, with 18% the next biggest shareholder but someone that hasn’t shown any interest in the club beyond the share price.

Desmond has three sons; all seem to be moderately successful in their own right in businesses based in Ireland.

Ross attended the 2019 AGM, sitting on the podium alongside the other directors, but didn’t make any contribution to the meeting with little known about the interest, or lack of, in Celtic shared by his brothers Brett and Dery.

In 2018 Celtic Underground broadcast a memorable podcast with Peter Lawwell.
