Davie Provan has hit out at the fawning media coverage given to Peter Lawwell as he prepares for his long, slow departure from the job that paid him £3.5m in 2019 as Celtic fans watched AEK perform in the Champions League.

Friday’s broadcast media conference was one long love-in to ‘Mr Lawwell’ without a single mention of St Mirren who were about to become the sixth side to celebrate in the away dressing room at Celtic Park this season.

Those asking questions were glowing in their praise for the out-going CEO as the torch was taken away from Celtic’s disastrous season.

Neil Lennon didn’t hold back in his praise for the man that has employed him twice either side of brief and uneventful spells in charge of Hibs and Bolton.

Scott Brown played to the gallery of the Daily newspapers by suggesting that a statue to Lawwell should be erected, perhaps the midfielder might want to contribute to the 24-hour security that the statue would require if it is placed outside Celtic Park.

Yesterday Brown wasn’t included in the 19 players selected to give St Mirren their first win at Celtic Park since 1990, in November Ross County enjoyed their first ever win at the same venue.

Provan has no reliance on Lawwell and called out his legacy as Dominic McKay prepares to inherit the mess created by his highly paid predecessor.

In The Sun he explains:

No Celtic board in history ever had it so good. Yet somehow they’ve allowed Rangers up off the floor. The buck stops with Lawwell. Despite fawning media coverage, his legacy is not a pretty sight. For starters, his announcement leaves Lennon twisting in the wind.

Lenny deserves better than to find himself warming the seat. With the title now gone he should be paid up now. Unlike some in his dressing room, Lennon can look himself in the mirror. He’s been done in by his own players and some brutal recruitment. He’s never had the leverage to push back against his board.

At the start of December Celtic promised supporters’ a managerial review in the new year. With one win in six attempts in the first 30 days of 2021 there is still no sign of the review seeing the light of day.
