Celtic supporters weren’t best pleased when Leigh Griffiths told the Daily Record that ‘fans quickly forget’ what Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have done for the club.
Fans are well aware of past domestic success which makes it all the more galling when they find their club TWENTY-THREE points adrift in second place in the SPFL. St Mirren and St Johnstone are as close to Celtic as the hoops are to Steven Gerrard’s side.
Griffiths has been given plenty of leeway from fans for his various absences over the last few years, popping up to score vital goals such as in the Scottish Cup Final against Hearts and netting in the penalty shoot-out tends to put you in credit.
But telling fans how they should think or feel is another story from someone who couldn’t keep himself in reasonable shape during the first Lockdown.
Admitting that he was a disgrace, just two weeks ago Griffiths told the Daily Record:
I let myself down. I let everybody down. But I’m trying to repay them bit by bit by helping the team, scoring goals and getting the team points. I had to take a long hard look at myself because I was a disgrace when I came back.
Well, when I say a disgrace, I wasn’t because when I left in March and came back I was only 2.5kg over what I was before but I wasn’t as fit as I should have been. That’s down to me and my professionalism. I take that on the chin. I’ve been slaughtered for that publicly and in-house.
Going into the Scottish Cup Final on December 20 Griffiths had only started one match this season, that ended after 45 minutes of the home match against AC Milan in October.
In December 2018 Brendan Rodgers revealed that the former Hibs striker was taking time off to deal with unknown issues, his next appearance came in July 2019 with Lennon back in charge.
Celtic fans have a better grasp of the club’s recent history and current issues than Griffiths’ as they reminded him on their replies to his Daily Record interview.

No offence Leigh you’ve had more lives than a cat…a decent manager would have punted you long a go for the amount of times you’ve let the club down….maybe best piping down and try winning games ?

If they had short memories they would only remember Griffiths as being a waster and unprofessional

Did Peter Lawwell write this?

Spin spin spin.

I remember perfectly well when he couldn’t be selected for the champions league qualifiers because he couldn’t be bothered to maintain his fitness. In case his memory is failing him, let me remind him it took him virtually until December to get fit. And he STILL can’t last 90mins

His thoughts would probably carry more weight if he was fit before November. Amazing player on his day but probably knows days at Celtic are numbered under a new manager.

Lennon can take Griffiths with him.
