David Webb is reported to be a candidate with Celtic expected to name a Director of Football/ Sporting Director to accompany the appointment of Don McKay as CEO.

The influence of Peter Lawwell has been felt in every area of the club but the 61-year-old recently announced that he will be retiring from the role at the end of June.

All of the Celtic directors come from a business background with the lack of a football plan or vision evident in recent transfer activity with only David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro of the players recruited over the last 18 months making any positive impact.

At the 2020 AGM Lawwell boasted of spending £35m during that period but after being knocked out of three competitions before the end of November and trailing by 21 points in the SPFL it is clear that whatever strategy has been employed needs to change.

Fergal Harkin has been linked with a role at Celtic, Webb’s background is worth considering since he worked with Eddie Howe at Bournemouth before moving to a similar job at Spurs.

The Daily Mail reports:

Former Bournemouth head of recruitment David Webb is emerging as an option in Celtic’s search for a sporting director.

Webb famously played a key role alongside Eddie Howe as the Cherries achieved promotion into the Premier League in 2015 with signings such as Callum Wilson.

He left his position on the south coast to join Tottenham as their head of elite potential identification, where he worked closely with Mauricio Pochettino and famed administrator Paul Mitchell – who is now at Monaco.

His most recent position was in the Championship with Huddersfield where he head of football operations. Webb’s in depth knowledge of the English, European and Scandinavian market – a region Celtic have traditionally found beneficial for talent – make him an attractive proposition.

During an early role with Crystal Palace, Webb spotted Wilfried Zaha playing for local club Whitehouse Wanderers. He also played a key role in Tottenham’s decision to sign Heung-min Son from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

Celtic have still to update supporters on the managerial review that they announced on December 7.
