Steven Gerrard has turned to ‘whataboutery’ after admitting that Alfredo Morelos deserved his retrospective three match ban for stamping on Ryan Porteous.

It was the second time in two months that the striker has been handed a retrospective suspension with Scottish referees apparently unwilling to send off Ibrox players this season.

Gerrard defended the forearm smash on Mark Connolly against Dundee United in December then wasn’t questioned when his club accepted the two match ban for an incident that referee Steven McLean thought was only worth a yellow card.

Last week at Hibs Kevin Clancy described two stamps from Morelos as a tangle of legs as Morelos was again allowed to stay on the park with the match referee ensuring that he maintains his place on the rota for lucrative big match appointments.

I have looked at the incident a lot of times and I don’t think there is a case for us to defend in this situation. Having said that, it doesn’t mean we are pleased with everything that happened in that game or has happened during this season or previous seasons.

So it is something behind the scenes that myself and the board are working very hard on in terms of trying to find better solutions in terms of the disciplinary and the processes that go on.

The question came from the in-house fan site Heart and Hand host David Edgar with virtually follow up from anyone else in the carefully scripted conference. Ronnie Esplin of PA asked about inconsistencies and was satisfied with the answer of not speaking about players from other teams.

After being expected back in January Gerrard revealed that Nikola Katic won’t play again this season, today’s Zoom call was conducted without wearing a mask. Almost everyone in the conference started with a ‘hello Steven’ or ‘Good Morning’ to their hero.
