Jackie McNamara has hit out at the snowflake generation of footballers who need instructed at every turn.

Celtic’s defending of set pieces has come in for special attention this season with the club losing the highest percentage of goals in the division from free kicks and corners.

Different players and formations have been tried in front of three different goalkeepers but regardless of who is selected it seems that every other club is clued up to exploit the soft centre.

Away to Ross County 10 days ago Jordan White took advantage of slack marking to give his side victory, after admitting that he had tried everything Neil Lennon’s resignation was announced three days later.

McNamara came from a generation that took responsibility for mistakes on the pitch and didn’t hold back as he told Go Radio about the fault-lines for this season.

Picking up on his interview The Sun reports the former Celtic defender saying:

You’re brought up knowing football and learning football every day. I guess at the top, the top managers out there, it’s the fine margins because they’re so elite but I think at this level the basics, the fundamentals, they don’t do.

That’s nothing to do with tactics, just marking someone and knowing that’s your job defensively. It’s a blame culture and the blame falls with the manager. If someone like Martin (O’Neill) comes in right now, as you say the snowflake generation might not be able to handle that.

Celtic have kept clean sheets in their last two home matches, both against Aberdeen with a central defence of Stephen Welsh and Kris Ajer.
