Celtic have 36 hours left to activate a clause in Leigh Griffiths’ contract- or risk losing the striker for nothing.

Although the Celtic website stated that he had signed a deal until at least the summer of 2022 it has now emerged that the final 12 months is an option in the clubs favour.

The striker has had another disappointing season but with a summer clear out coming up some fans believe that he should be retained to provide some form of continuity. Other fans are less generous about the player who admitted that he had been a disgrace during the first Lockdown.

The Sun reports:

Griff is waiting for a decision to be made on a year’s option which would keep him at Parkhead for another 12 months.

It’s believed the deadline for club chiefs to make their minds up on an extension – worth close to £1million for Griffiths – is tomorrow (April 30).

And if the Hoops decide against activating the clause, Griffiths will be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of May. Griffiths’ beloved Hibs would no doubt be keen on a move to bring him back to Easter Road for a third spell.

Celtic could offer Griffiths a deal after April 30 with his current terms, reported to be £1m a year, unlikely to be matched elsewhere and outwith the means of any Scottish club outside of Glasgow.

Patryk Klimala left Celtic last week for New York RB, with Odsonne Edouard expected to leave the next manager could be very short of striking options.
