Celtic’s announcement of a weekend long boycott of Social Media wasn’t taken too seriously by many supporters.
Alongside the Tweet, the club issued a statement on their website setting out their reasons for putting their accounts on hold.
Through a season of misery Social Media has a difficult task in maintaining communications with a support whose emotions have ranged between mild disappointment to outright anger.
Celtic are unlikely to top any popularity polls for Social Media use or interactions, since the current season went seriously downhill it seems that the club has gone into overdrive with Birthday Wishes and On This Day features.
The real issues of an under-performing team, a managerial review, recruiting a new management team and news on the ‘Additional Value’ for Season Ticket holders have all been thin on the ground.
This weekend Celtic are in action at Ibrox with Twitter a regular source of information relating to the match.
This time around there will be no tweets from Friday’s broadcast media conferences, team news will only be on the club website and after match reaction will be confined to their You Tube channel and the club website.
We will unite with clubs across Scotland for a social media boycott this weekend.
The boycott is in response to racist, discriminatory and personal abuse online aimed at players, staff, supporters and others associated with the game ??#FootballUnites ? #OneClubSince1888
