It had to happen, at some stage someone was going to drag Celtic into the scenes of carnage witnessed in Glasgow on Saturday and brand it as an Old Firm problem.

Throughout Sunday and Monday the coverage was very clear, fans from Ibrox caused chaos in and around George Square. Five Police Officers were injured with a dedicated unit set up to identify those involved and bring them to justice.

This morning Charlie Nicholas has decided to take a fresh angle on the incidents and bring Celtic fans into the discussion.

Picking up on his Daily Express column, the Daily Record reports Nicholas saying:

The actions of some Rangers fans show exactly why they will never get to England. It was like back in the dark ages again. They will never get true respect because they don’t know how to celebrate .

Celtic fans get too political when they celebrate and Rangers fans just don’t know how to celebrate.

That is why they will never get British Football. Recently people were suggesting a British Super League again after the European Super League failed. Guys like Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil were all about it.

People need a sense of reality because English football doesn’t need any problematic situations from Glasgow’s two giants. They respect the size of the clubs but that is as far as it goes.

During the course of nine successive title wins no damage was inflicted on George Square, no Police Officers were reported to be injured.

In May 2019 Police Scotland called off an open top bus parade for Celtic’s Treble Treble winners due to the size of the crowds in and around Glasgow Cross and the Gallowgate. Again there were no reports of damage to businesses or street furniture.
