Celtic have been linked with making an offer for Charlie Wyke of Sunderland.

The striker scored 25 goals in 40 League One appearances in the season just finished by Sunderland lost out to Lincoln in the Play Off Semi Final and now face a fourth season in the third tier of English football.

Wyke was first linked with Celtic by Mark Wilson on the Huddle Podcast but the idea didn’t go down well with Scott McDonald who remembered Wyke from a decade ago coming through the ranks at Middlesbrough.

Gary Hooper is the obvious exception but a CV that includes Bradford, Carlisle and Hartlepool doesn’t appear best placed to take over from Odsonne Edouard.

The Sunderland Echo reports:

Charlie Wyke has received alternative offers amid links to Celtic, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough, according to reports.

The Sunderland striker is currently weighing up a contract extension at the Stadium of Light. Wyke found the net 31 times in all competitions for the Wearsiders last term.

Who is making recruitment decisions at Celtic is anyone’s guess with Peter Lawwell three weeks from retiring and no Head of Football Operations since Nick Hammond left the club in March.

At the age of 28 Wyke will be looking to cash in on the season just ended, in 2019/20 he scored five goals from 22 starts in League One.
