A whole new era for Celtic opens up on July 17 when the Colts take on Bonnyrigg Rose at New Dundas Park.

Seven days later Berwick Rangers face the Colts at their adopted home of the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie.

For the first time ever Celtic have a team playing in the Lowland League with Celtic Colts sure to attract plenty of attention and comment.

Since the SPL Reserve League was abandoned in 2009 the club has struggled to find an outlet for Academy prospects to develop into first team players.

Kieran Tierney and Callum McGregor took very different routes into the first team with Stephen Welsh and Mikey Johnston closest to a breakthrough from the current crop of players.

For years Celtic have been trying to get a B or Colts team in the senior ranks but never got further than being allowed to play in the Challenge Cup.

In season 2019/20 the Colts beat Queens Park on penalties then lost on penalties away to Falkirk.

Schedules built around Glasgow Cup ties, the Reserve Cup and selected friendlies haven’t proved beneficial but a season in the Lowland League is certainly a step in the right direction for the Class of 2021.
