Chris Sutton was spilling crocodile tears as Sevco crashed out of the Champions League to Malmo.
For the last nine months Sutton has been getting told from all angles about how wonderful Steven Gerrard’s team were.
Drawing Malmo in the Third Qualifying Round was seen as a useful warm up towards a £40m cheque for participating in the Champions League. The Swedes thought otherwise.
Bitterly disappointing night for Rangers and Steven Gerrard against 10 man Malmö. Only have themselves to blame. Too complacent. Bad night for the coefficient.

Steven Davis scored with a stoppage time deflection in the first leg which apparently swung the tie towards the Ibrox club, not even a defeat at Dundee United on Saturday dampened down the delusions of Ally McCoist and Sutton’s other media chums.
Leading 1-0 at half time against 10 men the stage was set for progress to the Play Off round- until Antonio Colak struck twice early in the second half.
Ibrox was silenced, Gerrard looked clueless on the sidelines with the Swedes holding on comfortably as Ryan Kent, Steve Davis and Ianis Hagi sent shots high into the Copland Road Stand.
Next week Gerrard faces a Europa League play-off against Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty or Alashkert of Armenia.
