With a week to go in the transfer window Celtic’s pursuit of Giorgos Giakoumakis seems to be in a check-mate situation.
The player, VVV Venlo and Werder Bremen all seem to have a role to play but most of the informed speculation from Greece suggests that the striker will start next month as a Celtic player.
Last season’s top scorer in the Netherlands hasn’t played in any of his side’s three matches this season with Venlo picking up four points out of nine in their bid to return to the top flight.

While Kyogo Furuhashi has hit the ground running at Celtic there are question marks over Ange Postecoglou’s other striking options.
Odsonne Edouard is in the final year of his contract with Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths very much on the fringes of the new manager’s first team plans.
Venlo paid AEK Athens £300,000 for Giakoumakis a year ago and were rewarded with 26 goals from 30 appearances in the Eredivisie last season.
