Ange Postecoglou brought in 12 new signings to Celtic in the summer but Tony Ralston could easily be added to that list.

During the summer you’d have got long odds on the defender reviving his career but three months into the season you’d be hard pressed to name any player that has contributed more to the cause.

As player after player departed at the end of last season Celtic took up the 12 month option that they had on Ralston’s previous deal even though he only played one match last season- when 14 others were self-isolating post Dubai.

Ralston edged out Lee O’Connor in pre-season to start the home match against Midtjylland, in the return leg he earned some grudging praise and respect. At Tynecastle in the first SPFL match he scored an outstanding goal and hasn’t looked back.

At home to Dundee he scored another spectacular goal, his confidence grew and suddenly there was life after Jeremie Frimpong, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Jonjoe Kenny.

Ralston is now forcing a switch of position for a current Croatian internationalist, his performance levels have remained high with his desire on show in the header he scored at Hibs last week.

The Neymar days are over, as are the loan spells with the security of a long term deal Ralston can kick on with his career with a problem position now a strength as Postecoglou’s rebuild gathers pace.
