The Daily Record has given up on their clamour to anoint Steven Gerrard’s successor.

Over the last week the Glasgow based publisher has been running a live blog covering all sorts of nonsense related to the failure to appoint a new manager.

These days the Daily Record are very much on the outside looking in. No-one in the Ibrox hierarchy is briefing the newspaper that one employed James Traynor while the current PR regime brief their social media partners to attack every suggestion from the Record.

After ‘positive talks’ with van Bronckhorst on Sunday it is looking increasingly likely that Jermain Defoe will be in charge of Gerrard’s squad at Hampden on Sunday against Hibs.

At 5.15 tonight, the last post on the Record’s live blog was at 13.17 which seemed like a ‘search me’ message after flogging a dead horse for seven days.

It’s been a fairly quiet morning and early afternoon on this front, especially in comparison to the hype and excitement of recent days.

As revealed last night, van Bronckhorst looks unlikely to be in place for Sunday’s clash with Hibs and that’s taken a bit of momentum out of the story for now.

But Rangers have said they remain satisfied with how negotiations are progressing and there appears to be an accord on both sides that nothing should be rushed.

It does raise the prospect of Rangers’ interim coaching staff, led by B team boss David McCallum, being in the dugout at Hampden.

That’d represent a monumental responsibility for McCallum, Brian Gilmour, Jermain Defoe and Colin Stewart but one they’d surely relish.

They could even have van Bronckhorst watching from the stands if the deal isn’t quite done to put him in the dugout by the weekend.

Derek McInnes, Barry Ferguson, Tommy Wright, Shelley Kerr and Nuno Espirito Santo have also been linked with the Ibrox vacancy.

Any chance of a checkered flag to highlight sevco’s past and to let everyone know that the rangers footy klubs race is done, gone, finito at last and the financially doped, joke of a klub is finally wiped off the face of the planet..!!
