On the 21st of October all was well with the world as Steven Gerrard reassured fans about speculation linking him the vacant manager’s job at Newcastle United.

‘Do I look happy, do I look settled, don’t ask me silly questions then’ he answered in his smug trademark style.

Somewhere in Birmingham this week Gerrard is likely to meet a media pack that hasn’t been hand-picked and paid for the supposed privilege of asking soft questions prefaced with ‘Hi Steven’ or ‘Good Morning Steven’.

The interview was by Emma Dodds putting in a shift for BT Sport, she also hosts ‘Rangers TV’ on matchdays.

On Sunday against Ross County Gerrard almost certainly managed for the last time with no ceremony or show of affection.

Shortly before he staunchly stood to attention for a cannon fire Gerrard knew that Dean Smith had been sacked by Villa. That was the sign that he was waiting for.

Today or tomorrow Douglas Park will be asked for permission by Villa to speak to his manager, at that stage the battle is lost.

‘Don’t ask me silly questions’ is the likely response when Park asks Gerrard if he wants to formally speak to Villa.
