The fears and despair of Sevco fans last night was met by delight from Celtic supporters.

Over the course of Tuesday night the story of Gerrard to Aston Villa gathered momentum.

The big hitters at The Telegraph pushed the story forward around 8pm, later on Chris Jack and Keith Jackson backed up the news with talk of compensation and how the Ibrox board were fighting a losing battle.

Just last week it was being interpreted that Gerrard had turned down the Saudi wealth of Newcastle United but since Aston Villa sacked Dean Smith at lunchtime on Sunday the issue has taken on a new dynamic.

Getting rid of a home-grown hero in Smith points towards a glamorous appointment, central to the Golden Generation (of international failure) comes Gerrard who Christian Purslow, the Villa CEO, worked with for a year at Liverpool.

Nothing has officially came out of Ibrox or from Gerrard but on-message podcaster Heart & Hand knew that the game was up when they saw Sam Wallace, John Percy and Matt Law of The Telegraph were in on the story.

Less than a week after announcing losses of £23.5m for last season Douglas Park now has to find a new management team armed with £2m compensation from Aston Villa.
