Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that the Manchester United board has decided to end Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time as manager.

Yesterday’s 4-1 defeat at Watford leaves United in mid-table and appears to have been the final straw for the Norwegian who replaced Jose Mourinho in similar circumstances in December 2018.

Coming in initially as Caretaker Solksjaer led United on a great run that led the board to make his appointment permanent despite only moderate success in Norway at Molde, including home and away wins over Celtic in the 2015 Europa League.

The parallels with Neil Lennon have been more relevant with a legendary player being given allowances and sympathy that results haven’t merited.

Brendan Rodgers has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford but other than a 4-1 win over Manchester United last month results at Leicester have been bang average. Yesterday’s 3-0 home defeat from Chelsea leaves Leicester with just four wins from their first 12 EPL fixtures.

Since September 20 Manchester United have only won once in the EPL, a 3-0 win away to Spurs, on Tuesday they are away to Villarreal in the Champions League.
