The sadness of Bertie Auld’s death was quickly matched by a celebration of his incredible life.

A boy from Maryhill that starred in Celtic’s greatest ever moment and got to share and enjoy the adulation wherever he went.

Social media on Sunday night was flooded with pictures, stories and videos of Bertie- a man that every generation of Celtic supporters could relate to.

Pre-pandemic he was a regular at home matches, wearing his blazer with pride, stopping for pictures and autographs with a one-liner that fans took away and remembered.

One of the most popular videos was fairly recent, spanning his whole life as a new period of success opened up for Celtic.

At Hampden in 1957 the young Bert just missed out on selection for the 7-1 match as Billy McPhail’s hat-trick gave Jimmy McGrory’s side a trophy and reason for song.

In 1965 Auld, via Birmingham City, scored twice as Dunfermline were defeated in the Scottish Cup Final to open up the greatest era in Celtic’s history, Auld was at the heart of them all.

A few years later, following one European Cup Final victory, Leeds United, champions of England were seen off in front of a crowd officially recorded as 134,000.

In 2016 the Celtic baton had been handed on to Brendan Rodgers, Scott Brown, Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele. Bertie was in hospitality for the match but enjoyed watching Celtic’s 100th trophy win just as much as the fans all around Hampden.
