He has only made a flying visit to London, carefully staged by his advisors and Sky Sports News but already Giovanni van Bronckhorst has won the hearts and minds of the Daily Record Sports Jury.
A week ago Mister Gerrard still enjoyed God-like status but after walking away with five of his coaching staff the race is underway to find Stevie G II.
Over the weekend there was another development running in parallel with the London based recruitment process, The Herald and The Sun decided that a week after the Ibrox accounts had been published it was time to highlight the Going Concern warning from the club auditors.
Whether it is £80m losses in five years or £100m since start up in 2012 it doesn’t suggest a business heading towards breakeven in season 2022/23 as Stewart Robertson recently told a meeting with the gullibles.
Unless new investors want to under-write another spending spree Gerrard’s successor faces a very different scenario. Stopping 10-in-a-row cost £23.5m with on-going losses of around £2m/month against an ageing squad running down their contracts.
Despite that backdrop the Monday morning Record Sport jury returned a unanimous verdict of hope for their army of readers:
Is Gio van Bronckhorst the right man to succeed Steven Gerrard at Rangers?
KEITH JACKSON: The appointment of a manager is never a risk free business. But this one looks close to a no brainer. Van Bronckhorst has all the qualities required to do the job at Ibrox. All he needs now is to assemble the right backroom team.
GORDON PARKS:Â The issue at Rangers is more the internal disruption and a lack of funds which will be an initial problem for whoever takes charge. Van Bronckhorst could be a good fit as he’s more than aware of the demands at his old club.
FRASER WILSON:Â Definitely. He knows the club, is adored by the fans but more importantly has proven himself as a successful manager in a similar sized league leading Feyenoord to a stunning Eredivisie title success and two national cups in four years.
MICHAEL GANNON: The Dutchman ticks a lot of boxes. He’s got the experience and the star dust Rangers fans crave, with the bonus of knowing the club inside out. It looks a shrewd move.
With the non-internationalists reporting back after a week’s holiday today they’ll be met by Jermain Defoe and Jimmy Bell taking training with no sign of Gio or a new coaching team.
He’s gonna be 100% resounding success before he’s even in the door
