Until the turn of the century Remembrance Sunday was a solumn occasion, a day of reflection, of sadness as people paid their respect for two generations that had died in conflict.

The horrors of war can’t be underplayed. Parents waved teenagers off as they were called up, barely out of school and sent off to the trenches for a war that was to be followed on Pathe News.

Each year the second Sunday or November was a time of sadness, until Tony Blair sent troops into Iraq with hundreds of thousands on the streets protesting against the move.

In a sick bid to manipulate public opinion Remembrance Sunday was given a makeover, rather than remember two world wars that destroyed so many lives it became a celebration for every conflict involving the British Army.

Football clubs bought into it lock stock and smoking barrel. Suddenly there was a minute of silence before a 3pm Saturday kick-off, poppies appeared on shirts with clubs suddenly trying t outdo each other as they brought in soldiers, pipers and the rest to show their patriotism.

One club in Glasgow had to outdo all others. Soldiers abseiled into the stadium, serving soldiers took a lap of honour to the cheers of howling fans.

Yesterday one group decided to take things further as they celebrated Remembrance Sunday, turning it into a circus complete with a tank and the ultimate show of respect to the fallen- a dug was a sash.
