Ibrox fans turned their anger on Sky Sports as they reported Steven Gerrard’s interest in becoming the next manager of Aston Villa.

It is one thing a club being interested in a managerial candidate; it is something very different for a manager in a job to be sending out the signals that he fancies working elsewhere.

If it wasn’t true Gerrard’s agents would quickly be in touch with Sky Sports to kill the story off. That hasn’t happened.

News of Gerrard’s interest in the Villa job comes just three days after Dean Smith was sacked, it seems unlikely that Villa would have taken that action if they didn’t have a very good idea of who they wanted to bring in to succeed Smith.

Sky Sports News has had a surprisingly low key reaction this morning, most issues involving the Golden Generation of English football failures usually gets saturation coverage.

There has been no live reports from reporters at Villa Park with no sign of Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller or Alex Rae delivering Don’t Panic messages from Ibrox or Murray Park.

Late on Tuesday night Keith Jackson of the Daily Record and Chris Jack of the Glasgow Times seemed resigned to Gerrard’s departure, the penny has still to drop with other Ibrox fans.
