Bobby Madden hit a new low today when he sent off Funso Ojo for being attacked by a Dundee United fan at Tannadice today.

The Lanarkshire based referee has turned in some very puzzling performances this season, last month he managed to award 27 free-kicks against Celtic while the hoops had 62% possession away to Aberdeen.

Madden refereed three of Celtic’s first 12 SPFL matches, in the opener he refused to book his close friend Andy Halliday for a brutal attack on the ankle of Callum McGregor.

Today, Madden red carded Callum Butcher of Dundee United in the 42nd minute, three minutes later Ojo hurdled an advertising hoarding, as he put the brakes on approaching the crowd one United fan raced forward to aggressively push the Dons midfielder.

Having booked Ojo in the 40th minute the second yellow equalled red with both sides down to 10 men, at the interval Madden red carded Dons boss Stephen Glass.

Ojo will now be suspended for Sunday’s visit to Celtic, in the 80th minute of today’s game Ian Harkes scored the only goal of the game for Dundee United.

Aberdeen should have responded like AZ Alkmaar a few years ago. A fan ran onto the pitch and attacked their goalie but fell over in the process. Goalie responded by giving the guy a kick before the police dragged him away. Referee gave the keeper a red card and the Alkmaar coach ordered the team off the pitch and refused to play on. Match was abandoned and replayed with the red-card rescinded. Mind you, I can’t see the SFA taking the player’s side!

He’s had a second yellow for confronting the fan after he’s been pushed.
He is simply not allowed to do that.
He should have either collapsed like a pack of cards and got the guy ejected from the stadium or turned and reported it to the referee but he can’t do what he did.
I’m no fan of Madden but in this instance he is correct.

    • Deano says:

Agreed mate, nobody going to mention him giving the ballboy a wee push just before the fan pushed him?

  • Pan says:

He was not correct! He has no wisdom and is a thoroughly horrible and incompetent referee. There was no confrontation, but what should happen is that the fan should be identified and charged as this fan assaulted the player. Why the police did not grab him just shows how poor the police are as well.

Players should be protected and in this instance , as in many other instances, Madden did not protect a player. I have seen this happen on the continent, in France, and the referee simply putting his arms round the player and gently coaxing him away, while the gendarmes jumped in and arrested the assailant.

The Dundee Utd fan is a thug and I imagine his parent should feel ashamed tonight. Dundee Utd must act, or they should also be ashamed. It is very easy to identify this person from the video. No wonder Scottish football is looked on with scorn, when we have this happening.

Madden is a certainlty to be awarded the cup final now.. especially if his team beat Hibs tomorrow.
As for the clown in black at Hampden today: Beyond a fucking joke.
