Ange Postecoglou has explained the appointment of Antoine Ortega to his backroom team.

The Frenchman has taken on the role of Data Analyst but will have a more significant role than crunching through spreadsheets to provide reports.

Since Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester City there has been a steady stream of staff leaving Celtic with little urgency to bring in replacements with a return to trusting old school ways of identifying issues.

A mix of using experienced eyes backed by hard facts would appear to be the way forward for assessing the current squad and identifying future signings.

In October Celtic appointed Anton McElhone as Head of Sports Science, explaining the latest addition to his staff, Postecoglou told The Sun:

Antoine has started and there is a lot going on, stuff that doesn’t affect us in the short term, but is still important to what we want to build. The analytics thing is well beyond me. That’s why we brought Antoine in.

Analytics is where the future of scouting and player identification is going. These young guys are much better skilled at, and schooled in, getting the right information, then filtering it and putting it in a form we can understand.

There is a lot of jargon and the one that really gets me is XL — because that’s all my clothes!

Frenchman Ortega previously held a Data Analyst role at Benfica which seems a decent endorsement for his ability.

Some Celtic fans had hoped that Peter Lawwell’s departure would lead to the modernisation of the club, that hasn’t happened immediately but it seems that some important roles are now being filled behind the scenes.
