Mikey Johnston is reported to be a transfer target for Aberdeen.

The winger has been in and around the fringes of the Celtic side this season, staring just four matches this season with Ange Postecoglou calling him off the bench 14 times.

Back in 2017 a loan move to Aberdeen worked wonders for Ryan Christie’s development, transforming the midfielder from a squad man to an essential starter once he was given an opportunity under Brendan Rodgers.

Johnston already has two Scottish Cup winners medals but a loan move to another Premiership side could be of interest to the 22-year-old.

The Daily Record reports:

Aberdeen are considering a loan move for Celtic star Mikey Johnston. Stephen Glass wants to expand his attacking options and the 22-year-old winger is among a number of options on a January shortlist.

Dons captain Scott Brown is a huge admirer of the Parkhead academy graduate and has offered up a glowing reference. Aberdeen want to bring more pace into the final third and Johnston is viewed as a potential solution,

However, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou may be reluctant to sanction a departure as he contends with a number of injuries and absentees.

Postecoglou has one week left to put the finishing touches to his squad but decisions are bound to be impacted by the spate of injuries Celtic have suffered.

Johnston wasn’t listed among the substitutes at Alloa but with Jota returning from injury opportunities for the Academy graduate look limited. James Forrest and Reo Hatate can also play on the left-wing with Adam Montgomery expected to go out on loan.

Great move for both parties. Been calling this for some time now, to get Johnston out on loan to Aberdeen or Hibs. Mikey has been unlucky with injuries, but patients are running out on him breaking through to be the player we all hoped he would be. A loan stint at Aberdeen for 12-18 months could do him the world of good. If he’s still the same after that, then it’s time to cut the cord and let him go on a permanent move to grow his own career elsewhere. If he can learn and turn things around, then he could have lots of potential and big fu to re at Celtic. I wish him well and really hope he does make it, but the proverbial ball is now in his court.
