Callum McGregor is looking at a two month absence according to the Daily Record.

The Celtic skipper took a blow to the left cheekbone during Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie against Alloa Athletic and had to be substituted by James McCarthy.

Since the match there has been no official comment from Celtic but from the television pictures of the collision and his treatment it seems clear that McGregor suffered a fairly serious blow.

The Daily Record reports:

Celtic are facing the nightmare scenario of losing Callum McGregor for more than two months.

The skipper is awaiting the results of scans amid fears he suffered a fractured cheekbone in Saturday’s bruising Scottish Cup win against Alloa.

McGregor was forced off with a nasty head knock and is likely to miss crunch clashes with Hearts, Dundee United and rivals Rangers in the short term.

But the damage could be bad enough to see the captain sidelined for up to eight weeks – which would include several key encounters in Scotland and in the Europa Conference League.

With David Turnbull out with a hamstring injury and Tom Rogic away on international duty Celtic face three crucial matches without their three first choice midfielders.

Yosuke Ideguchi could have been an alternative but he took an ankle injury early in the second half at Alloa that saw him replaced.

McCarthy and Nir Bitton look like coming into the side to face Hearts on Wednesday with recent signing Matt O’Riley expected to come into contention for a quick debut.
