Thomas Broich has claimed that Ange Postecoglou was happy to set Celtic on fire on his own.

The Australian accepted the job of managing Celtic in June, flew in to a new continent and got hands on without surrounding himself with trusted confidants.

When Postecoglou was announced as Celtic manager it was assumed that he’d bring in at least one coach, someone with experience of the UK game and likely to also have an Australian connection.

The new boss concentrated on the playing side, assessing what he inherited and bringing in a dozen players while reviving the careers of Tom Rogic and Tony Ralston.

Three international breaks have provided Postecogou with a breather to assess the backroom set-up at Celtic but as he prepares for the second half of the season he seems more than happy to work alongside the coaching team that he inherited on arrival.

Midfielder Broich was brought to Brisbane Roar by Postecoglou in 2010 and has kept in touch with his old boss as his coaching career took him to the 2014 World Cup Finals, Japan and now Scotland.

Discussing Postecoglou with Australian website Keep Up he said:

I’m actually quite surprised it’s working so well already. And he did it by himself… he didn’t bring anyone with him. I asked him about that, why he didn’t insist on working with people he already knew and trusted.

He told me: ‘My job was to convince the people here to set this club on fire with excitement, create some passion and vision’. He liked that challenge, to win people over to his way of seeing football.

Who does that nowadays? Normally coaches bring in a team of 10 people! He did it completely by himself. He’s a remarkable man. Incredible.

With transfer business appearing to go to plan Postecoglou will be back in the dug-out in 10 days time when Celtic face Hibs in their first fixture of 2022.
