Celtic are reported to have been quoted a fee of £3.5m to sign Mehdi Gjayedi from Shabab Al Ahli.

Ange Postecoglou has expanded Celtic’s scouting network way beyond Europe with the hoops boss previously mentioning the attraction of Iranian players.

Gjayedi seems to be one of the highest profile players in Iraq with Al Ahli taking him to the UAE during the summer transfer window.

The Daily Record reports:

Celtic are keeping tabs on Mehdi Ghayedi after Shabab Al Ahli set their asking price for the striker.

Ghayedi, who can play as a left winger or second striker, only joined the UAE Pro League club on a five-year deal in August 2021 but reports in Iran suggest that Ange Postecoglou and the Parkhead scouts were keeping tabs on the striker, despite his agent claiming he was “reluctant” to leave the club.

The Irna News Agency claim that Celtic remain interested in the striker and have been in constant contact. A £3.5 million price tag put on the attacker if he is to leave the club Middle East this month.

The arrival of Daizen Maeda and return to fitness of Giorgos Giakoumakis has given Ange Postecoglou genuine alternatives to Kyogo Furuhashi after being heavily reliant of the former Vissel Kobe striker in the first half of the season.

With Albian Ajeti still at the club it seems unlikely that another striker will be brought in while the Swiss international is still on the books.

Matt O’Riley seems to be close to becoming Celtic’s fifth January signing with the pace of transfer activity this month a massive contrast to previous seasons.
