Ange Postecoglou has hit out at the speculation over Kyogo Furuhashi’s absence due to a hamstring injury.

The striker had to be substituted during the Europa League win over Real Betis on December 9 but recovered to score twice in the League Cup Final win over Hibs 10 days later.

After sitting out the 0-0 draw at St Mirren four days later Kyogo was in from the start against St Johnstone on December 26 but suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and had to be replaced by Joey Dawson. More than a month later there is no timeline over when the striker will return to full training.

Celtic signed Daizen Maeda last month to provide an alternative to Kyogo while Giorgos Giakoumakis has started the last three matches contributing goals against Alloa and Hearts.

Discussing Kyogo on January 24, Keith Jackson of the Daily Record claimed:

If the injury has become so serious that it now requires surgery then Postecoglou’s insistence that the talisman will most certainly be back before the end of the season seems optimistic in the extreme.

No matter what Postecoglou may say in public, behind the scenes Celtic’s medical experts have been discussing the prospect of Furuhashi’s hamstring being put under the knife for an operation which normally requires around four months of full rehab time.

The Daily Record is one of Celtic’s regular media partners, in his last newspaper interview as Celtic CEO Peter Lawwell spoke to Jackson in June 2020 about his hopes of having fans inside Celtic Park for test matches before the SPFL season got underway. No fans attended any home matches until July 2021.

After missing the last three matches with a facial injury Callum McGregor took part in training today, with Nir Bitton suspended and David Turnbull and Yosuke Guchi both out injured there could be a role for the captain tomorrow night.
