Ally McCoist was put in his place when he started his wise cracking routine this morning about Celtic.

The TalkSPORT presenter is rarely short of gags when it comes to the SPFL leaders although he was strangely quiet after putting in a shift for Sky Sports at the Glasgow derby earlier this month.

On Transfer Deadline Day Shay Given had the misfortune to be in the Sky Sports studio when Kris Boyd celebrated the biggest signing in Scottish football since Paul Gascoigne’s arrival from Lazio in 1995.

Two nights later the former Newcastle keeper was at Celtic Park for the derby match as he reminded McCoist on air this morning. Picking up on discussions on TalkSPORT about tonight’s match against Bodo Glimt, the Daily Record reports:

When the popular breakfast show’s bookmakers odds provider told the pair that the Hoops were 4/1 to progress, McCoist fancied a bit of that.

He said: “I think they’ve got a chance. I know it was an extremely poor result and the first time a team, certainly a Scottish team, had been beaten in Europe by a Wi-Fi password.”

That had legendary goalkeeper and Celtic fan Given in knots along with former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

But Given fired back: “I seen Bodo/Glimt play more football at Parkhead than Rangers about a month ago when they couldn’t get the ball off them. Don’t start piping out now.”

It is strange of McCoist to discuss European football, in four matches as manager of Rangers he drew two and lost twice as the club crashed out of the Champions League and Europa League with the season barely underway.

During that one season in the top flight his side did get 15 points ahead of Celtic at the start of November but the hoops roared back to comfortably win the SPL title under Neil Lennon.
