I think it was nasty- former SFA ref calls for Hatate action

Former referee Steve Conroy has joined the clamour claiming that Reo Hatate should have been sent off during Celtic’s Scottish Cup win over Dundee United.

The Celtic midfielder was booked during the first half for a lunge at Kieran Freeman then replaced at half time by Tom Rogic.

A red card would have resulted in Hatate being suspended for next month’s Scottish Cup semi-final but it seems that the SFA Compliance Officer has decided against taking retrospective action.

Express Sports Editor Lindsay Herron, a former Rangers media chief, reports:

Former Grade 1 official Steve Conroy told the Get Involved Referee podcast: “I think it was nasty. I think his studs were definitely showing and I think that was quite calculated considering the distance he had to cover.”

Fellow ex-whistler Des Roache agrees. He said: “It should have been a red card. I know a lot of people are saying it wasn’t a lunge but for me Hatate was running at speed and the ball had ricocheted away.

“Having gone to ground he had the time to divert away from the tackle but for me he chose to continue with the tackle.

“So he’s gone with a straight leg, he’s come from a distance and his studs were slightly showing and the other player has not had the opportunity to get out of the road. So he has not thought about the safety of an opponent.”

The report fails to mention the views of Conroy and Roache on Beaton’s decision to disallow a ‘goal’ from Daizen Maeda which everyone on the Premier Sports panel claimed should have stood.

Conroy decided to retire from refereeing in March 2012 after a spectacular descent from handling his first, and last Glasgow derby to a regular run of matches in the lower divisions.

His Glasgow derby performance is best remembered for his failure to send off Kyle Lafferty for a high and dangerous foul on Andreas Hinkel.

And just exactly where was Mr Conroy when Celtic players were having str8 leg studs up tackles reigning in on them this season? I’m sure we would all have appreciated his insight and calls for said players to be banned.
Pitiful…..I actually feel sorry for these sad bastards.
